The BedZED Project

With the icreasing climate awareness and the impact of carbon dioxyde studies, the architect Bill Dunster created a project of an environmentally-friendly populated area -the project includes 99 homes and almost 1500 square metres of working space situated near Hackbridge Station in London, United Kingdom. Populated with ordinary and working-class people, the project was aimed to explore the opportunity of decreasing the impact of the atmosphere pollution by the use of fossil fuels and coal in the production of energy. Which in turn is of great interest to companies that are interested in cutting the carbon footprint of industry, like Enigin.

The main principle of the project is the Zero Energy -every home is equipped with solar he panels and the total coverage of the panels is 777 sq.metres thus providing eceltricity and hot water for the households. The gasifier, even though being installed, is not used thus shrinking the usage of gas in the district. Another important feature of the project was the tree waste generator working with fuel obtained from the tree waste -this supplies significant amount of energy for the heating systems of the homes. The people living in the area are encouraged to use public transportation since the whole point of the project is to shrink the use of fossil fuels and these are being used in the car transportation. The houses face south so that they can take the maximum amount of solar heat during the day when this is aimed to reduce the use of the heating system and the release of CO2. The materials used for the project were mainly renewable or recycled materials so that the main point of reducing pollution would not be achieved at the cost of spending on extracted resources and brand new materials. Recyclling systems are being used in the district with innovative approaches so that the recyclling of the households waste would be highly efficient.

The studies made after the completion of the project showed that really the project is energy efficient and reduces the carbon emissions in the air.
